Is your supply chain data safe?

The number one security breach comes from the chair to the keyboard. Meaning that most hackers gain access to your company through an employee clicking on a phishing email. Companies have put in place more robust firewalls for email, training employees on how to spot a potential phishing email and installing antivirus software to protect themselves. Yet, they have failed to protect their supply chain.

Direct connectivity between companies is a major risk of hacking. In many large breaches, attackers do not break in through the public internet – they enter through trusted network connections between supply chain partners. Often these connections bypass the defense perimeter because they are “trusted." In modern breaches, attackers don’t hack the target first, they enter through a connected partner.

Company-to-company communication often bypasses perimeter defenses because they are “trusted” communications. If attackers steal API keys, tokens or certificates, they can impersonate the partner system. Many may remember Target’s breach a few years back. Target wasn’t attacked directly. The attacker came through one of their HVAC vendors.
